Production call sheet 2nd november
This filming date was not successful because Sam was unable to attend sixth form. Instead, I imported footage from the filming we did on the 1st of November, and worked on my blog.
Production call sheet 1st November
The filming went successful, we arrived to Hainault Forest on time and filmed all the necessary shots. Although, we had to change a few shots as we found them to be too time consuming; it begins to get dark early in the afternoon near 5.30pm and we wanted to make use of the little sunlight appearing during the day. We changed two shots of him walking, into two shots of him sitting down, he sat in the same style as one of his poses from the photo shoot earlier on.

Production weekly reflection- week 7
This past week has been half term and so far this has been the week with the most problems encountered. The targets from last week were not completely met. The plans for this week were that we complete the majority of the shooting script and film as much as possible. We divided the filming into two days- the 27th of October and the 28th of October. We had the intentions of filming in Hainault Forest and also complete all the London shots in central near the Thames.
The first problem which arose was the weather, I was constantly checking to see if the conditions would be suitable to record in, when it came to the actual day, the raining was light, and filming could have been possible. However; Sam's availability was also limited on this day, as he did not return any response towards my communication. The following day unfortunately one of the actors, Talha, cancelled due to some family problems. I tried contacting Sam but he was unavailable so I took initiative and decided to film with Soraya myself rather than waiting for Sam to reply. I filmed what I could from the shooting script, as the day proved very limiting in terms of actors, help from my partner, weather and mise-en-scene.
I was only able to film six shots all together because there were hardly any moments in the shot list where Soraya would be by herself. I was disappointed as I was unable to film the desired amount of shots this week. I tried my best to communicate and get responses from all the actors needed, but unfortunately they were either very sparse in response or did not reply at all. I sense that perhaps I may need to find another actor to replace Talha as he is helpless in his current home situation, and another guitarist as Harry has not responded through any new media communication or any social networking sites. I fear that if we find another actor to replace Talha, then we will need to re-shoot the shots of Soraya on the steps looking at Talha's picture.
Initially I wanted to create a "behind the scenes" video which would be edited in my own time during the week but due to the circumstances of being behind schedule and problems faced this week, I don't believe I will be able to create the extra feature. At this stage it would be a wise decision to focus on what is priority and key in this project rather than worry about extra features which are unnecessary at this point.
We are behind with our filming but we are up to date with our pre-production tasks. I have managed to regularly upload what has been required. Over the half term our blogs have been marked and we will be informed of what is missing when we return to school on the 31st of October. If there has been anything that I have overlooked during uploading, my main focus will be to immediately create and upload.
This following week my targets are:
To get in contact with Sam and discuss a more suitable method of communication and planning so we can film on time.
To contact Talha and see if he will be able to help with the music production.
To find someone to replace Talha if he is not able to help.
To complete anything I may have overlooked in my own time and upload.
Production Call sheet 28th October
Once again we encountered a problem and Talha was unable to film due to family problems; also I was unable to get in touch with Sam, so I took action and decided to film the sole shots of soraya at her house. We completed a few shots but overall I did not get to film the amount of shots I initially wanted to.
Production Call sheet 27th October
Unfortunately we were unable to film as planned on this day because Sam did not return any communication over the half term resulting in us losing filming time.

Pre Production DigiPak Template
Unfortunately because most of our images on the Digipak are based around an area we have not filmed at yet, we were unable to provide an accurate demonstration as to how the final template will look. However we have filled in a very rough template with a few images which represent our artists brand.
I spoke to my partner, sam, as to how he would feel in adding a 'behind the scenes' bonus feature and a 'photo shoot special' onto the Digipak. To demonstrate an outline of what the 'Behind the scenes' feature would be like, I will film and edit a short example in my own time of what it would be like.
We have taken a little inspiration from James Morrison and his album cover, how he uses location to represent himself and how the bricks behind him help to emphasise the artist himself.
We admire the way the title of the artist is larger than the album name, but both are still relevant and bold to the person viewing the cover/advert. Even though James Morrison is not an 'indie artist' his style is mellow and unique, its modern yet still separate from the crowd. We want to go for a slightly more trendy look but the provide the same sort of modesty in our Digipak as James Morrison has with his marketing.
I have noticed that the reason for the artists name is in bold is because Island records/Universal Republic want to make the artist name into a brand rather than the album name, allowing them to further market and use the name for other merchandise. People will associate the clothes and style on the pictures (left) with the name "James Morrison".
In the same way we will advertise and brand 'Balloon Ride Fantasy' rather than the album name or the song names.

Pre production weekly reflection- week 6
This past week myself and Sam created an inaccurate Digipak template and booked ourselves in for a photo shoot session in the media room studio. We had to create an inaccurate example of our Digipak and no example of our Magazine advert because most of our pictures were going to be based around the places we film in London. Due to the fact that we haven't filmed in those locations, we have used previous images from my Independent and further research into mise-en-scene. Once after we have filmed we will create another rough template of how we want our digipak and magazine advert to look, then we will begin to complete our final ancillary products. The pictures we have taken during this week will be edited as soon as we come back to school on the 31st of October.
Whilst Sam creates the final Digipak and Magazine advert in Photoshop, I will use Final Cut Pro to edit what we have filmed so far. We will work together at the same time on both projects so we can have each others opinion and consent whilst making a particular decision.
During the photo shoot this week we had a few problems, but nothing serious we did not overcome. The first concern was the lighting, which gave off smoke and made us one light short at first. The technician had a look at the light and made it usable long enough for us to finish our shoot. The second problem was dealing with the shadows created by Sam and all the lights. Majority of the time was spent trying to reduce as much shadow as possible, until we came to the conclusion that we can use photoshop to edit the prominent shadows out of the pictures.
An issue we ended up facing was how we were unable to use the photo shoot pictures for the rough template of our final Digipak or Magazine advert. This does not slow us down as we still have our initial hand drawn template to use as guidance, but it does put us at a slight disadvantage. We were helpless in the matter because we had planned to film and take more pictures during the half term holidays, and our entire marketing scheme for our ancillary products relies on the pictures from the 'London Filming' days, which we have not tackled just yet.
This following week we have our half term holidays, where Sam and I plan to film the majority of our narrative section in the shooting script. We have planned to film for three days, one day we will cover the narrative between Soraya and Talha, one day will cover all the shots of Sam in Hainault forest and hopefully if there are no difficulties and Harry Maxwell is free, we will cover his shots in Hainault forest as well of him playing the guitar (This can be done in the same day we film as Sam but to be on the safe side we have set another day aside for him.)
Harry Maxwell suits the look we are going for as well because he has a casual indie style to him which suits what we're aiming for. We will shoot the rest of the studio scenes with him and sam when we are back at school after half term.

Pre Production photo shoot for DigiPak and Magazine advert
We took numerous shots of Sam for the DigiPak so we have variety to select from when it comes to choosing the final picture. Our DigiPak mainly revolves around a metal doorway in the city which we haven't filmed at as of yet, so we cannot provide an accurate template of how we want our DigiPak to be.
The photo shoot was done after the deadline needed for our Digipak, unfortunately we were unable to use any shots below for the rough outline of what our Digipak will be like. Once we have the shots and pictures ready from our production stage we will re-do a template, which will be an accurate representation of our final piece.

Pre production weekly reflection- week 5
This week Sam and I experienced filming three of our shots from the shooting script. We encountered several problems during the week but we maintained a level of communication and resolved each situation as it came.
The first problem was writing the treatment; Sam and I had finished writing it together, but then faced an issue of blogger playing up and deleting the post. So we had to find time to re-write the entire post. Though this was not as time consuming as we already knew what to write, it was difficult to find time because of how our time tables were clashing through the week. We decided to complete the treatment after we finished our shooting scrip as it became our priority in the past week.
We had been struggling with the shooting script due to the detail we were going into, we had decided to plan out how we were going to edit whilst writing the shot list so we do not have to waste any time during our post production stage. This will be useful later on, however for the time being it was quite time consuming and long winded. We spent an estimated amount of three to four hours solely on our shot list, meaning we spent most of the week trying to complete one post. Of course independently we continued with our own work, Sam completed his analysis of music videos and I did further independent research looking for locations within London to film at. I managed to find a bridge which had an outlook to the London Eye, Big Ben and a city view of all the buildings. I took a few primary source pictures and looked into how we could film from certain angles. I am happy with the final plan of filming using the mise-en-scene of central london, I feel as though it will give the artist a softer representation.
Another problem we faced was having to decide our final guitarist. We both looked for some consultation and were told that a guitarist not strumming the guitar properly would be the equivalent of some one not lip syncing correctly. Since we were given the advice, we decided to go back to our very first option of using a boy named Harry Maxwell who has experience with guitars and musical skills. We have asked him to listen to the song and he claimed he would be available to film with us. Unfortunately neither same nor I know Harry on a personal level, so we are unsure about his reliability in terms of punctuality and enthusiasm; but from the feedback we have gathered about him, we have found that he seems an appropriate candidate for the task. We have very limited options to begin with, not using Harry would be an unwise decision and would lead to more time being wasted in looking for another guitarist.
We had a few conflicts regarding shots and ideas but we used compromise and after moments of incompatibility we came to mutual agreements. An example of previous conflict we have encountered was when we could not decide where to film the guitarist, Sam wanted to use 'forest shots' where as I preferred filming the instrumental based performance in a studio. To resolve this we decided to use both locations as there is not worry about continuity and we can be as montage as we please. I felt as though a 'proffessional' look to the guitarist would be more appeasing rather than just single shots of someone playing an intrument in the forest, it gives us variety and choice.
We filmed for the first time during this week and we made the mistake of not playing the song outloud as well as sam not singing outloud. We only filmed three shots which could be easily refilmed but we will still experiment with using the footage already recorded. We decided to film at all the locations closest to us first, so far we have been to roxy ave and later this week we are making plans to go to hainault forest to shoot a few more guitarist scenes as well as lyrics. We also plan to book out the studio to take pictures of Sam and Harry. Another benefit of using Harry is because he matches the second member of the group very well, Balloon Ride Fantasy is made up of two ginger haired men, both Sam and Harry are also ginger.

Pre Production Further independent research
Once again I went to London to find an appropriate bridge to film on. I crossed several bridges until I came across a walk way over the Thames, opposite embankment station, just before waterloo bridge. It had the view of the London Eye, Big Ben and the rest of London City. It seems like the perfect mise-en-scene to use not only due to how convenient the path is in itself, but also because it gives a clear view of London.
The view above is a primary source picture which I took at the location demonstrated by the map below.
The location shows two major key monuments such as the Big Ben and London Eye which are both famous all over the world. By filming here we would be "killing two birds with one stone", the single location instantly provides a strong sense of where the artist has been born and bread and by using shots of suburban streets we represent how made it from one side of London, to the other.
The railings along side the walk way are easy to film along and manoeuvre the camera over; also it is perfect for a shot of Sam leaning over looking out to the view of London as we have planned in our pre-production.
Although, by only closely observing one set of railings I feel as though it limits ourselves. I looked at another location with railings (close to the the walk way) where the view of london is still clear and people use to lounge about. We could have a few shots of Sam singing lyrics whilst sitting in front of the rails connoting he is no different to anyone else in the world.
For the narrative I found this grassy spot near the tower bridge which has a beautiful view of the Gherkin. Unfortunately, because it was dark, it was difficult to see it and the pictures I took with my low quality camera constantly came out blurry, however I did manage to get shots of the tower bridge lit up, which would be the view between the couple in our narrative story. At one point there will be a shot of Sam Coleman sitting in between the couple as if he were invisible to them whilst they have a moment of dramatic tension.
Pre Production treatment
The artist we have chosen to work for are called 'Balloon Ride fantasy'. It consists of a team of two composers, a guitarist and vocalist who have been creating for a very long while. Their content contains a sense of humour, they write song lyrics based around quirky topics such as zombies, Japanese dream lands and other bizarre themes, sung in catchy tunes. Their representation is unique and different to what we have already seen on the market, they have a strong indie-pop flair to them and Sam and I want to highlight this feature about the band. We want to represent them as very modern young adults who know about whats happening today. We would like to present them to our target audience with a vibe of sarcasm and irony that the current generation is swarmed with due to the Internet. Whilst doing some research, we found images from magazines and artists such as Ed Sheeran and the Kings of Leon who resembled exactly what we would like to portray.
Our target audience will be between the ages of 15-25, a young generation who have experienced education and 'young love'. The age range involves people who would either be able to relate to the experience as statistics show divorce rate for couples under twenty is 80-85%, or they would be able to sympathise with the main narrative character as they are in a stage of their life where they are most prone to heart break and rejection. The type of activities our target audience would be most involved in would be gigs and celebrity meet ups, people who socialise and have access to meeting new people and learning about new artists through word of mouth.
The needle and thread that will string our three products, the music video, the magazine advert and the digipak will be a balloon and a graffiti wall along with a metal door Noor found in her independent research. The balloon will relate back to the album name we created, called "float away". The balloon will be in a few shots and seen towards the end drifting away to symbolise how things we have now, might "float away" later. Also, the metal door will be used on the cover of our magazine advert and on the digipak to show a clear link between the sense of location. We aim to portray the genres of indie rock and pop, as the artist has the voice of a mod-indie. The type of audience member we will target to appeal to will be indie and edgy who will find contemporary music most appeasing to their personality.
The music video we plan to create will have a number of different locations incorporated into it. We have planned the mise-en-scene so we have a variety of shots and places to choose from; allowing us to have a wider selection and prevent ourselves from limitation. We will show a representation of our artist through his background and he starts off being in the streets and ends up being in London, just like our narrative couple. We are going to use a HD camera which will allow us to capture the real colours and brightness of London. We did not want the video to seem gritty at all so we made the choice of using a HD camera rather than a standard camcorder.
The editing will be snappy and fast, at first we would edit to the bar and then move onto editing to the lyric, then return to editing to the bar. The style we have chose is slightly similar to that of Rizzle Kicks video 'Down with the Trumpets', we will use clear match-on-action during the beginning but then move further in the narrative later on in the song. The pace of the video will also match then emotions of the male character who will propose to his loved one. At first he feels excited and happy, the camera movement will match this as well as the editing. It will be slow and the panning will be gentle with slower cuts, then later as the music speeds up and the male character feels upset and has a break down there will be more cuts rather than camera movement.
To film we will use a HD camera to make every shot clear and visually appealing. This will provide a more pleasant visual for the audience to look at. Music videos do not tend to have any grittiness, they are usually shown in good quality even if the scene being shown is depressing or dark urban. We will also be using a still camera or my personal Sony digital camera to take pictures, I will also use my camera to make short video logs of moments of us filming to give a 'behind the scene' look into our work, and how we have progressed. Later on during the post production stage we will use 'Photoshop' to begin creating our digipak and magazine advert, along with 'FinalCut Pro' to edit our music video together.
For the sake of convenience we plan to film in local area's close to us around the school, many of them are all street locations where the artist will sing on his own. We have also planned to film in London locations close to the River Thames, where we will be filming our two narrative actors and the artist. We will also be filming in Hainault Forest in a green mise-en-scene. Before deciding the locations we had to contact the artist to find whether if using their song 'Monocle City' would be permissible. The only permission we needed was from 'Balloon ride fantasy' and they were very cooperative and also sent us the lyrics for their video. They were comfortable with us using their song and making a video to it. We have not had the issue of copyright at any point.

Pre production weekly reflection- week 4
Once again, this week I was aiming to complete all the pre-production tasks for the deadline which was on Wednesday. However, due to complications such as our treatment getting deleted and difficulties in deciding what shots to use whilst creating our shot list we have been delayed and are currently working over the deadline. This is a minor set back which we are trying to over come, I have completed what I set myself this week, which was: Finishing the creative audience feedback through social networking, completing the research analysis and helping Sam finalise a rough sketch of what our ancillary products will look like in the form of a flat plan.
Whilst doing the creative feedback, I felt as though it wasn't as successful as I hoped it to be. The video I created received a few comments with basic feedback. After analysing the feedback and what I said in the recording, I now realise the information I gave to the viewer was very sparse and lacked depth as well as key information. My mistake was trying too hard to grab the audience attention instead of feeding them what they needed to know; I have learnt that it is better to refrain from making time consuming information outlets and keeping to traditional forms of questioning for qualitative feedback. The only positive aspect in my actions was how I had gotten replies from numerous sources of social networking rather than just one, this is not necessarily good, but it reflects that people over a wide range of networks are aware of the plans Sam and I have decided upon.

The only tasks we now have left to do are finishing the shot list and re-typing the treatment which blogger lost instead of saving. We were slightly disheartened by the obstacle of having to re-do the treatment, but due to the fact we have already done it and discussed everything, it wont be as time consuming this time. This will need to be done during our free time. We are in the process of completing out production schedule for the following few weeks so we have an agenda to follow every week along with set goals and targets. At the moment we are meeting a large number of our targets, although we have surpassed a deadline, concerning us in regards to filming time and post-production processes such as editing.
The shot list is currently half complete, we have discussed and settled with 55 shots so far, and plan to have at least 80-100 shots by the end of Monday 10th of October. We have been noting the time frames during 'Monocle City' of the lyrics and the bars so we are aware of how to edit in future, making our post-production process slightly easier. To make filming slightly easier as well we have colour coded according to mise-en-scene so we can group shots and read the shooting script without having to flick through pages or shot numbers.
During our exploration of ideas and location, we also discussed the possibility of using a 'red balloon' in the video towards the end, as well as in our Magazine advert and Digipak. Once again, this would be done to present consistency to the target audience. The idea then lead us into creating the album name 'floating away' tightly tying in with the artists name and 'Balloon concept' representing light heartedness.
Also, we asked 'Rajiv' whether if he would be able to be our guitarist and his response to this was "Keep looking for someone else, but don't rule me out either." Meaning we have him as a last resort option. For now after careful consideration and contemplating Sam and I have decided to use myself as the guitarist. This will be convenient as I will be reliable and I also have a personal guitar available to me at all times. The decision seems wise as we can film my 'guitarist shots' straight after Sam's performance shots in the same locations with out having to travel an excess amount.

Pre Production feedback obtained through social networking
To make giving feedback a little more interesting and gain as much qualitative research back I created a video briefly explaining what the narrative will revolve around. I have asked people to give me some feedback and their responses were as follows:
In this feedback we were given a lot of advice, with warnings about how love is a very common theme and is done very often. Which is true, but most videos involve the artist or narrative characters falling in love rather than falling out of love. The videos which have had plots about leaving love behind have not been based around marriage, a theme which our video will explore. From this we have started planning more detail into our narrative and have decided a studio based performance by the guitarist would be appropriate and add a visual appeal to the target audience which we will grasp through the theme of rejection and the 'pain' as well as memories that come along with it.
Some feedback was more productively helpful than others, I understand this was because I didn't go in to depth about our ideas and how we would carry them out. I should have created a power point perhaps going into an explanation of each area of the music video, discussing mise-en-scene, costume, design and how our ancillary products would fit into the music video to gain more qualitative answers.
From the comments above, 3/4 of the people gave brief answers with no detail. The last comment on the post however gave a response with a little insight regarding story and camera movement. There was the suggestion that we have a montage of all the 'happy moments' the main narrative character had spent with his girlfriend in the past compiled together and shot of the girlfriend walking towards the former partner towards the end. From this particular feedback myself and Sam feel that we should explore the montage idea and plan out how we could arrange it. It would be slightly difficult as we would need the actors to be available to do numerous shots at different locations such as at home, at the park, in london, going to the cinema, in a shopping mall, eating together in a restaurant and having fun at a bowling ally.
I have already looked into gaining permission for the 'bowling ally' and the 'restaurant' however filming in a shopping mall would be difficult, although we could over come this by filming on the high street where the shops are outside and open to filming. This 'montage idea' could be used as a flash back in the video giving us the opportunity to play around with colours and use grading as well as effects and lighting.
This person connotes that the video should be comical, of course the initial plan is to make the video serious and ironic. We will continue to launch our initial idea as although the idea may sound comical the video in itself will be dramatic. The general theme of the band is comical because they explore topics regarding supernatural beings, however we feel it would be appropriate to show a seriousness with in 'monocle city', to reflect a more relatable image to the target audience.
Once again, I feel as though I was not clear enough and should have made my points clearer. For future reference, if myself and sam need detailed feed back with constructive criticism, I will create a power point explaining the themes and ideas we wish to portray.
The comment above suggests that there should be another appearance of the main female character, and the point made about having her appear once again towards the end is valid. This helps to reinforce the idea of creating a montage of all the happy times celebrated by the couple over the years, what they used to be and what they have become. This allows the video to explore a new angle and insight of the characters feelings. We can have the male character having a mental break down and during this mental break down we can have editing to the beat or to the lyrics "go, go, go." to make it fast pace and visually memorable. Another factor pointed out in the feedback is the effectiveness of the lip syncing, which we will be very careful with. As Sam is going to play the role of 'artist' in our video, he will be sure to have the 'appropriate look and lip movement' whilst we film the artist based performance.

Pre-Production analysing survey results -audience research
During this week myself and Sam thought up questions to put into a survey using Survey Monkey for our audience research. We asked questions involving topics such as age, race, style, clothing, camera movements, design and typography to help us see what our audience is interested in viewing. 18 people answered our survey and gave us feedback on what they would prefer seeing or what they think would be the best route to choose regarding our music video.
The first question we asked was "Do you like the concept? if not please specify why." and the response we recieved for it was mainly positive. 57% of people thought the initial idea was an interesting one. The question had a choice of 'No, it has no appeal what so ever' but no one gave us a verbal response- but we are quite happy with what we already have planned and seeing as the majority of people like the idea, we feel it will be successful. If we had an explanation from the person who answered with "no, it has no appeal what so ever" we would have taken into consideration of how to approve our initial idea. This is one of the problems of using a survey, not everyone are interested in answering or typing anwers into boxes which give them flexibility to express their opinion.
The artist most compared to Balloon Ride Fantasy are the 'Kings of Leon'. They have a very strong rock theme to their videos and songs. The style we have chosen to go with is quite different to the kings of leon, but we will take certain things on board. The kings of Leon have very tasteful, modern indie clothing, sometimes their choice of fashion is quite subtle but sometimes it is bold, we will follow the same path and make our 'artist' look like a young adult with a 'rock and roll' flair as well as a subtle indie look. The audience replied with some feedback saying that "Blink-182", "Guns and Roses" and "Neon trees, owl city, the killers" are similar to our artists as well. We have decided to have a slight childish flair as 'Owl City' has- (we will use a balloon in our ancillary products and in the end of our music video.)
The mise-en-scene we had already decided on was 'local' and 'central london'. This doesn't influence our decision but it does enforce that our initial idea for location is strong and people will appreciate it. We are limited with location to begin with and using london city (its main land marks) will be significant in setting out the 'london rocker' setting. No one voted for 'inside school' meaning we will definitely not be incorporating high school teenagers, instead of a boy or a teenager, we will use an office with in the school and make it look like a business work place for the narrative section of the video.
The age group that would be most interested in our theme, style, concept and song would be people between the ages of 16 and 24 as they are most voted for. We would round it up to a generation of about 10 years, so we are going to aim for the target audience of 15-25 as this is the age range for all prime 'love problems' that our video will be demonstrating. Some teenagers propose too young and get rejected and some young adults propose and are rejected by their partner because they want to experience life. Not everyone will be able to relate to the video because everyone do not necessarily have the idea of marriage denied, but they have had some sort of a rejection. Whether if that is being rejected by a person they like, a person they had a crush on, a long term relationship that may have ended. Our video sets up a situation where the audience who haven't experienced heart break to feel sorry for the person who has.
Most people listen to music through youtube, as this is the fastest and easiest recourse to use. Not only does Youtube allow you to listen to the music it allows you to enjoy the music video for free, along with being able to interact with other people in the comments section. It works as a playlist as well because of certain features youtube has introduced into its interface. Our video will definitely be posted on to youtube, we had finalized this since the beginning.
We are going to use Sam as our 'artist' due to easy access, although most people voted for 'brunette hair' we have no choice but to use someone with ginger hair. This was our initial idea and although people expect brunette hair, we can give a 'shock factor' in our video by having the unexpected. With this question we wanted to know what type of a person the audience imagine and which type of a look they are most interested in seeing. A lot of people did actually answer with "caucasian with ginger hair".
From this we have learnt that people like movement. They like to see constant panning or tilting movement which we have already planned out. We are going to use a number of high and low angle shots as well as zoomed images and close ups of the artist singing. The plan for editing is to keep the camera moving until the very last few seconds where the camera remains still to connote the heartbreak of the main character in our narrative. We will have a few close ups of the artists face as well as his hands and a 'side on' close up from a high angle. Through doing this the hair will be quite highlighted therefore boosting the slight 'shock factor'. One person responded with 'fade ins and outs' which we will use at the beginning and at the end, then through the middle when he is on one knee proposing to his lover, and she rejects him. The black outs will seem almost like time speeding up and moments going so fast its like a flash.
